When I was a theater manager, we wouldn't check bags, but if you brought in something bigger than a purse, like a plastic grocery bag or a backpack, we would require you to leave it at the box office and pick it up when your movie was done. If you refused, you could take your bag with you to the theater if you let us search it first. If you refused that, then you could get a refund and leave. We weren't worried about outside concessions, though we would confiscate that if we found it, we were more concerned with recording equipment. Because if someone records a movie in our theater and pirates it online and the studios can trace it back to our theater, we'd get in trouble.

This was done in the days before 9/11 as well. I haven't worked in a theater for over 5 years so obviously it wasn't because of the shooting in Colorado.

Me neither. Not once in 17 years have I had my bag in an American cinema checked.

I haven't encountered that at all.

It happened for a couple months after the shooting at one theater I go to, but they stopped. Just a peek in the top, they didn't touch anything. I went last night and nobody checked anything. The other theaters I go to never started doing it.

I'm surprised to hear women take a pocketbook to the movies. It can't be that you put it down on those icky floors.
