The opening scene to "Boogie Nights" is the best opening scene to a movie that I have ever witnessed. Paul Thomas Anderson is a brilliant director and that is his finest opening scene to any of his movies or in my opinion to any opening movie. Hits on all cylinders.

"I believe in America, America has made my fortune..."

The opening line of The Godfather. We see the undertaker as he pours out his story of his ruined daughter to Don Corleone who we only see from the back...

...the scene goes on and we hear the Don ask why the undertaker went to the police, why didn't he come to him? Bonasera explains and the Don replies...

"....if you had come to me in friendship then the scum who ruined your daughter would be suffering this very day. And if an honest man such as yourself should make enemies, then they will become my enemies. And then they will far you."

A great, great opening scene. It established the underworld power of Don Corleone and educated us as to how he gained control over the people in his orbit. It showed why everyone held him in such awe.

Grandstander for the win! Others that bear mentioning:

Casino Royale. Bond movies always have a notable opening, but Casino Royale was the best ever.

UP. One of the best love stories ever told in cinema, beginning to end, in less than 10 minutes, and not a word of dialogue spoken. Sheer genius.

JAWS. The quintessential "less is more," and the perfect use of movie music.

Night of the Living Dead

True Lies

STAR WARS

Raiders of the Lost Ark

Once Upon A Time in the West

My favorite is Terminator 2 and how he arrives and says to the biker, "I need your clothes, your boots and your motorcycle..."

That's easy:

Once Upon a Time in the West ( Opening Scene) (1968) - YouTube

Once Upon a Time in the West (1/8) Movie CLIP - Two Horses Too Many (1968) HD - YouTube

I'll give a distant second to Jaws, which is saying something, given how much I love that movie and that opening sequence in the surf.
