I didn't mind the new Mutos but I would love to see the originals like Ghedorah, Mothra and Rodan again. The Smog Monster, Jet Jagguar and others, I'd pass on personally but the big three are ones that have name value and can translate now that we saw Godzilla hit huge.
Eh. Ghidorah is basically just Godzilla with hook hands and a beak. Rodan is a less buggy Muto. And Mothra ...? He's just a big moth. No coolness factor whatsoever. I don't care how big the moth is, a moth just isn't scary. Megalon is just a big cockroach.
Jet Jaguar ... okay. That I would excite me. But I'm a nerd.
Honestly though, you know what they ought to do? Something different. We've seen Godzilla smash city after city after city. He's an ocean monster. Why not have him fight another ocean monster? We now have CGI to not only make it feasible, but make it awesome.

Many people did find Rodan in the male MUTO in the screen caps from the trailers, I'll give you that but it was more a pterodactyl monster. Ghidorah was a hydra mixed with Godzilla so I can see it. As for a big moth not being cool or scary, I'll have to agree to disagree. MANY bugs are scary to people no matter the size of them. Add in atomic antenna and wings that can cause microbusts, it is pretty scary. Similarly with Megalon, some people just find any cockroach scary.
I think the old monsters can work. Unless you grew up watching the Toho movies or are willing to watch them on Netflix, they are new to them. It's like comic book movies, people didn't get the idea of Iron Man movie going into 2006 ComicCon. By 2008 when it was out of theaters, people realized how wrong they were. I feel Godzilla could have done that again but for the Toho movie monsters. Time will tell if Rodan, Mothra, Ghedorah, Megalon and Jet Jaguar get green lit.
Could something else work, yes. We've seen Cloverfield work and that was an original movie monster in a similar vein to the Toho creatures. I just think that the name recognition of Rodan, Mothra and Ghedorah would be better at least for the next movie.

Add in Jet Jaguar, and we have Pacific Rim. Rodan is unnecessary because we've already had a flying MUTO. Ghedorah (3 headed dragon), Megalon (cockroach from Home Depot), Mothra (a giant moth) will not fit the tone of the film. Cloverfield is similar in tone to the MUTOs.

I read the article you posted and to what I am saying about potential sequels or spin-offs (which I actually wanted to see because I loved the idea of all the monsters in the Toho monster universe.) I wasn't talking about throwing them all into Godzilla like the fanboys thought with the trailers. To the average person, they look at the male MUTO and I think they would think that is Rodan (despite the MUTO being a flying preying mantis compared to pterodactyl like Rodan.) Even fanboys thought it was Rodan based on the fuzzy screenshots in the trailers. I agree, in this one Godzilla needed to shine. In the sequels, they may actually fit. I'm not saying to include them if they don't fit but in this first movie, it would have hurt the legacy of a Ghedorah, Mothra or Rodan.
FYI there is a sequel that is tentatively green-lit.

What happens after the first movie is both interesting and of concern.
Really? I liked Godzilla 98 as well. but Godzilla 14 was really good.
