There were many American actors in the 80's, actors such as Sylvester Stallone, Clint Eastwood and Arnold Schwarzenegger to mention but few. In your own few who do you think was the greatest among the American actors in the 80's.

Not a very good decade for film, but I think Robert DeNiro, Robert Duvall & Jack Nicholson were at their best in the 1980s.

There were several movie icons of the 80's such as Eastwood, Stallone, Willis etc., but I wouldn't consider them great actors. Perhaps Harrison Ford, DeNiro, Nicholson, Gene Hackman, James Woods, Mickey Rourke, Jeff Bridges, Al Pacino, Michael Douglas all come to mind.

Robert Duvall is the greatest living American actor. He shone in the 70s, 80s, 90s, 00s.

I liked Tom Selleck in Magnum P.I., I wanted to be just like him. With the mustache, The cool car and being in Hawaii. Magnum was da bomb. He was cooler then Chuck Norris even......

Folks, Chuck is knocking at my door. He saw my post!

Action movie stars are far from great actors imho, plus asking for an American actor and listing Arnold S. makes no sense to me.
I am down with Robert Duvall, great actor and probably a bit underrated. I would consider Clint Eastwood but I feel he wasn't that well-versed in the 80s.
Robert Redford, Paul Newman, James Earl Jones, Al Pacino, Dustin Hoffman, Gene Hackman or Robert De Nero would make more sense.
I like Bruce Willis but much like Sly, he is a great action movie actor but not a great overall actor. Tom Selleck is a decent actor but, imho, he was not that great or versatile on silver screen nor enough to overshadow most other well-known ones.

Duvall has had some fantastic roles....Tom Hagen, Colonel Killgore, the corporate executive in "Network" and of course Gus McCray in "Lonesome Dove." He won the Oscar for "Tender Mercies."

Since Lonesome Dove though, I can't think of anything he has done which was distinguished, in fact, he mostly seems to be playing a parody of himself, just sort of phoning it in.
