I liked the original, too, mainly because I am fan of Peter Weller.

wow, so they're going the typical Hollywood route and having the remake be PG-13?! I'm sorry, but a movie like Robocop HAS to be rated R. I need the foul language and graphic violence, and the original Robocop had lots of both.

Leave it to Hollywood to disrespect a classic film by making a cheesy remake.

I liked the original a lot. It was not campy or cheesy at all, in fact, compared to other comic book/super hero/sci-fi movies of the 80s, it was actually quite violent and gritty with quite a bit character development and drama giving the character a much more human feel. Weller did a wonderful job, even his sidekick blonde was decent. Remakes are sadly a common thing in Hollywood and they will not go away, I just wish they would be more selective about which ones to remake and do it well. I can only imagine the remakes of the remakes 150-20 years from now. How else would they keep all them mediocre actors employed and the Canadian film industry growing? They need your donations in the form of overpriced theater tickets. The important question is; would you like butter on your popcorn?

It's as pointless as the total recall remake

Seriously, remaking classic films is doomed to failure, as usually the remake will fail to match the original.

I would LOVE to see a good remake of this movie!

With good actors, a solid plot based on the games with solid SFX could be really awesome and surpass the original.

Depends on the filmmaker. In the hands of a good filmmaker, remakes can be far better than the original. Consider:

THE THING (way better than the original)
OCEAN'S ELEVEN (better than the original)
DIRTY ROTTEN SCOUNDRELS (never seen the original; but the remake is great)
KING KONG (better than the original)
PALE RIDER (more of an homage than a remake of SHANE, but still quite good)
THE FLY (way better than the original)
INSOMNIA (never saw the original; really liked the remake)
THE DEPARTED (better than the original and a great movie)
CASINO ROYALE (not only better than the original, but the best Bond movie hands down)
A FISTFUL OF DOLLARS (as good as the original)
TRUE GRIT (haters may hate, but this was way better than the original)
THE MAGNIFICENT SEVEN (maybe not as good as the original, but still a great movie)
3:10 TO YUMA (both are great movies)
THE THOMAS CROWN AFFAIR (better than the original; sorry, but it is)
TRUE LIES (never saw the original; the remake was great)

The thing (way better than the original) no way! It was a prequel anyway?
ocean's eleven (better than the original) original was a weak film, never seen it though
dirty rotten scoundrels (never seen the original; but the remake is great) never seen either
king kong (better than the original) what????? No chance (which remake are you talking about?)
pale rider (more of an homage than a remake of shane, but still quite good) never seen it
the fly (way better than the original) i agree, but the original is a b movie.
insomnia (never saw the original; really liked the remake) never seen it
the departed (better than the original and a great movie) never seen it
casino royale (not only better than the original, but the best bond movie hands down) the 'original' is a spoof, so i don't consider it a remake
a fistful of dollars (as good as the original) never seen the remake
true grit (haters may hate, but this was way better than the original) never seen it
the magnificent seven (maybe not as good as the original, but still a great movie) seven samurai is miles better
3:10 to yuma (both are great movies) never seen it
the thomas crown affair (better than the original; sorry, but it is) i agree, both are pretty weak films anyway
true lies (never saw the original; the remake was great) it was a weak film. Arnie's only really good films are terminator (1) and conan the barbarian. Predator is fun after they stop 'acting' and just blow stuff up
Point is in the case of a poor film then yes the remake can improve on it, but with a classic film such as Robocop? It'll fail guaranteed.

John Carpenter's THE THING from 1982 was a remake of THE THING FROM ANOTHER WORLD from1951. Carpenter's movie is not a prequel and is far better than the original, which is a good movie in its own right. I know they made a new THING prequel a year or two ago, but I didn't see it.

I just can't classify ROBOCOP as a classic. It was a fun yet extremely cheesey '80s flick. I remember it with some fondness, but I wouldn't call it a classic. THE TERMINATOR is a classic. BLADE RUNNER is a classic. ALIEN and ALIENS are classics. ROBOCOP is more like THE RUNNING MAN or PREDATOR -- 90+ minutes of dumb fun.
