One ending that a friend and I found awkward to talk about after leaving the theater was Grifters.

Good movie, great performances but it was a tough finale.

After posting this I found it on pay per view and re watched recalling it's been 28 years. Classic later 80s-early 90s film noir with the dramatic accompanying musical score.
To confirm, ending is a longer VERY awkward scene followed by a total WTF moment.

It's worth watching, just don't expect to feel good about it afterwards.

I can't think of another movie ending that is so sad and so redemptive at the same time.

Lots of good ones already mentioned. Also depends on how one defines “ending” also, I guess. Will add:

Citizen Kane
Birdie
Murder on the Orient Express
Vertigo
Zootopia (though this is true of several Pixar/Disney Lassiter films also)

Lest we forget one of the most classic of unexpected endings.

Did anyone see The Village by M Night Shyamalan? I saw it coming but it was still an interesting ending.
I did. Like you, I saw it coming.

Reminiscent of this was the Denzel Washington film Deja Vu.

The Mist was alright. On a scale of shocking twist. 7/10. If you think that twist is good. Get back to me after Predestination with Ethan Hawke. That movie twist was mind blowing. 10/10.

For me three of the most WTF ending is this:

OldBoy (original)
Predestination
Jacob's Ladder

The most unexpected ending for me was No Way Out with Kevin Costner.

That was because I was late joining DH and friends at the theater and missed the opening sequence. I watched the entire movie from a point of view that was entirely off base!
