Saving Mr. Banks opened recently, starring Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Thompson as P.L.Travers who wrote Mary Poppins.
We liked the movie a lot, much of which is told by a string of flashbacks to the childhood traumas of Travers.

I just saw this yesterday and quite honestly I was a bit disappointed. I immensely enjoyed the scenes that took place in the 60's with Walt and the Sherman brothers and although I understand the reason for the flashbacks I felt they were a bit excessive and out of place at times. It felt like I was watching two movies at the same time. Tom Hanks did a great job as Walt though.
Lots of flashbacks, a bit annoying. If they'd told the entirety of Travers' early life up front it would've been too much, so they piece-mealed out that background material as needed during the progress of the story to support each advancing scene of her visits with the Disney people.

We went to see this today and absolutely loved it.
It took a while for me to buy into Tom Hanks as Disney, but after awhile, he WAS Walt Disney; Emma Thompson deserves an Oscar nod for her role. Even the supporting actors were really good.
It was well acted, up-lifting, and we talked about the movie all the way home. Can't say that about most of the garbage out there.

We enjoyed it, but I think it's more meaningful to people like us that saw Mary Poppins in the theater as kids, or have at lest shown the video version to their kids. I imagine that people with no familiarity with that old Disney classic wouldn't find it nearly as entertaining.

Oh yes, I agree. You probably have to be a Mary Poppins fan to really enjoy this film.
