When all is said and done, those movies will be in the black. Movies are no longer just about domestic ticket sales.
Mars needs Moms has had a lifetime gross, domestic and foreign, of $38M and change. For a development budget of $150M. And it opened on 3000 screens - they really thought they had a winner.
There's no way in h.ll that movie turns a profit, ever.
I saw 47 Ronin last night based on this thread and expected to see a real stinker. The truth is, it was decent - certainly better than The Man with the Iron Fists. Visually, it was pretty to look at; plenty of nice cinematography, a stimulating color palatte, and an interesting choice to populate feudal Japan with mythical creatures. It certainly dragged a little in places (probably due to a first time director). All in all, there are certainly worse movies playing out there. That being said, there is no way that this film looks anything like it had anywhere close to $175 million spent on it. That number is a real head scratcher.
The problem with Hollywood is they release all of their best, most interesting movies that I'd like to see in a small time frame, usually November thru December, and then for months afterward there's nothing but lousy movies I have no interest in seeing. I wish they'd spread the wealth around a bit.
Two movies surprised me: "The Wolf of Wall Street" did better than I thought it would and "Saving Mr. Banks" doing a lot worse than I thought it would. How could you go wrong with Tom Hanks playing Walt Disney?
Playing at 3,507 locations, Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues opened to $26.8 million this weekend. That's below the first Anchorman's $28.4 million debut, though it's not an apples-to-apples comparison: Anchorman 2 burned off some demand with a Wednesday start, and opening weekends in December are historically much lower than those in July (when the first movie opened).
For the five-day frame, Anchorman 2 earned an estimated $40 million.
Anchorman's opening was generally in line with Paramount's expectations, though it does seem like the movie should have done a bit better.
It's important to remember that movies that open on the weekends before Christmas tend to have lower-than-expected openings before playing well through the holidays. Even with a disappointing "B" CinemaScore, it's still possible that Anchorman 2 hangs on well over the next two weeks, and a final total north of $120 million is likely.

That's $38M in ticket sales. That's not factoring video sales, cable rights, merchandising, foreign broadcast rights, etc. It may take 10 years to run in the black, but it will eventually.
And knowing Disney, they'll likely turn it into a badly written, horribly acted TV show in which they'll cast the next generation of child actors they can grind into their meat machine.
