I saw it there too. I can remember everyone pointing out all the local spots and saying things like "There's my dentist's office!" It remains one of my favorite movies.

I don't think they could get enough of todays actors and actresses, to get along with each other, to film a movie like this now.
Lets try to recast with todays actors and actresses.
Drew Carey for Johnathon Winters, maybe Buddy Hackett.

Guess I'm the only one who thinks it's a god-awful dumb farce?

Yep, you're the only one.
A movie like that can't be taken too seriously. It's a fun romp. Go along for the ride and enjoy.

This thread convinced me to order a copy from 'Amazon.' I hadn't seen the movie for many years. It is still very funny, and I enjoyed watching it yesterday afternoon. Ethel Merman was amazing, I had forgotten what an old cow she played here. She never stopped screeching, and hitting folk's with her purse from start to finish!!

I have it on DVD but it's not the full length version, it only runs 161 minutes.
My fave is Dick Shawn as the surferdude Sylvester on the phone with Ethel Merman.
I like when digging he says to Jonathan Winters character, "Out baby, you're buggin' me"
Winters says, "Who's calling me baby"
I like when Winters goes crazy and destroys the gas station.
Phil Silvers was great too. Especially when he counts an extra share for himself.
Jim Backus with Hackett and Rooney bit in the plane is hilarious.
Lot's of cameos too, even a very brief one by Jerry Lewis.

I always liked Phil Silvers..... a real funny guy. He got stuck playing variations of Sergeant Bilko, but he always made me smile. It was interesting to me to watch and listen to Mickey Rooney. He was so polite all through the film. I met him almost 10 years ago, and he is a very polite man in real life.

They just dont make movies like that anymore. A perfect classic!
I saw it in the theatre with my Mom and Dad as a little kid. I didnt get too much of it then, but I remember my Mom wiping tears from her eyes. As I got older and always made a point to watch it, I 'got it' more and more, until the same laugh-til-ya-cry phenomenon happened to me. Every time I watch, I still catch things I missed, before. Cinematic genius
