Depending upon what era of the Middle Ages you're talking about, people from the Middle Ages would have spoken either Middle English or Old English. If Middle English, they might catch some words here and there, but they wouldn't be fluent enough to understand everything. Ask your high schooler who's trying to read Chaucer.
