Is this what the "race issue" has come down too? Why does it matter who is cast as who? Charlton Heston and Yul Brynner, Christian Bale and Joel Edgerton, or Samuel L Jackson and Denzel Washington, what's the difference? Hell, cast Whoopie Goldberg and Oprah for all I care! Don't we have better things to worry about then how a movie is cast? Like something important?
Dang! Am I the only one that understands "the bible" is a work of fiction? The characters could be portrayed by fruit bats & it would be just as realistic!

Spoken just like someone who has most likely always had the luxury of taking their own skin color for granted. Minorities are consumers just like whites are, so we have every right to complain about a lack of representation in our media.

Whether or not you personally believe the Bible to be true or false is irrelevant. You know that Egypt is a real place, and you know that it has never been a place where someone who looks like Christian Bale would have been usual.
Why? Because you disagree with the point? It doesn't work that way, unfortunately. I'm doing nothing but engaging discussion on a very real subject. An uncomfortable subject, but a real one nonetheless. If you don't care for the topic then leave. No one is forcing your participation.

If it doesn't matter and there is no difference, then the audience can enjoy these stories with non-white actors shown in roles other than slaves. It's ridiculous.
hellpaso - I see the bible as a work of fiction also. All the more reason not to waste more time debating the color of the ancients; just go ahead and put some people of color in leading biblical roles.
I am seriously disgusted that, in 2014, we still have white actors playing biblical figures. I read the director's excuse for his gross miscasting, and the man is completely full of s***.
I think the point being made by the producers is a legitimate one. There aren't any well known Egyptian actors who can draw a large audience worldwide. Omar Sharif is far too old for the role. Casting marquee names is an important part of box office strategy for movie companies.
Could they have cast some Egyptian unknowns in the roles? Maybe but it would have been a risk and the movie itself would have to be great enough to stand on it's own. Casting well known western actors provides some insurance that even if the movie isn't all that good, some people might go see it just for lead actor.
The whole point is after all to make money.
