When Isabelle Huppert picked up a piece of tissue paper covered with semen then put it near her nose in La Pianiste, I dropped my jaw. I knew it was gonna be a disturbing film but that was just too gross. I mean, semen does not smell good.

That scene in American History X when the skinhead killed a guy by making him open his mouth and bite a curb, then stomped on his head, breaking his jaw off. Ugh, I cringe just thinking about it.

Saving Private Ryan - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Portrayal of history

Saving Private Ryan has received critical acclaim for its realistic portrayal of World War II combat. In particular, the sequence depicting the Omaha Beach landings was named the "best battle scene of all time" by Empire magazine and was ranked number one on TV Guide's list of the "50 Greatest Movie Moments".[1

How shocking was it?

Enough to give many/most Veterans flashbacks and nightmares.

I don't want to be the gross one, but....it doesn't smell bad to me. Have you ever smelled your own? I mean, have you ever....you know....and then put the sock (or whatever you used to "catch" it) up to your nose? You can almost get high off of the smell, it's fantastic. Alternately, you could just smell the palm of your hand that you used. I swear I'm not just saying that to be nasty. But it smells great - better than the smell of bacon.

What a conversation .
Semen's smell makes me gag, I literally can't believe some actually swallow it after a blowjob. Maybe the semen you have smelt(or tasted?) wasn't that bad, but judging from my (limited) experience, it's effin' disgusting.

But I can cope with sock or foot.

It was made after a true story. Disturbing - maybe, but not most shocking.
I remember seeing another German movie about a man who moved to a tent middle in a forest and starve himself to death. He wrote diary about every day experience, till the day he was too weak to do so. "The sound of insects" also made after a true story. Actually very interesting movie...
European movies are quite different.
