America's "proper" Mad Scientist, Edison stole several of his best ideas from him: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nikola_Tesla
("Master of Lightning" PBS documentary is the best I've seen)

+1 about Teddy. I understand the excellent documentary film maker Ken Burns just released a 7-part miniseries, but I've not seen it: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Roosevelts_(film)

Eddie Rickenbocker
Theodore Roosevelt
Bass Reeves would be an exciting picture
Robert E. Lee (the guy who played him Gettysburg, Martin Sheen I think, nailed the look, but this could be an epic role for a serious actor as he's one of the most complex and dramatic figures in American history)
Christopher Lee once his WWII activities are declassified
Benjamin Franklin

Especially on Ben. His story has been touched by several other stories, Jefferson, Adams, etc. but the only one that focuses on him that I've seen was a pretty interesting Modern Marvels episode, (s13e19 "Ben Franklin Tech", aired 2006-05-25)

Not really talked about all that much and the guy probably had something to prove, but didn't seem to be really looking to harm any one.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_White_House_helicopter_incident.

As criminal as it was, one could look past all of that a bit and see it as sort of under-dog/by any means necessary sort of inspirational tale.

Not to mention that Robert Preston just sort of fell into the backwaters of history not long after.

Well, there's so many I'd like to see, so here's a few of my top picks:

Dr. Joseph Warren - Joseph Warren - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sir Ernest Shackleton - Ernest Shackleton - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Ted Williams - Ted Williams - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

And I second the Ben Franklin suggestion above.
