Nearly every summer-season movie, particularly the superhero movies, culminates in a grand scale battle in a city's downtown. Avengers, Transformers, even Star Trek.
I first noticed it in Superman II. Are there any earlier examples, or was that the movie that every other movie follows?
The 1953 version of War of the Worlds. There is a climatic battle that takes place in downtown Los Angeles where the Martians wipe out the city. That is one of the earliest battles I can recall in a movie.
How about the original Godzilla he stomped all over Tokyo once he made it through those high power lines.
