As a former cross country runner, I was borderline insulted how the movie treated the sport of cross country. They treated it as if it were some country club sport and equivalent to golf. First off, the fact that the movie is even insinuating that a BRUTAL sport like cross country is equivalent to swinging a golf club is just horrible, and that cross country runners are all hanging at the local golf club is also just not true. The movie also insinuated that cross country is only for wealthy schools and private schools and that's far from the case, as well.
I mean, honestly, cross country has the least "gear" someone has to buy of all of the high school sports, with tennis shoes all that's needed.

That's what my daughter's coach told me, except I've spent close to $400 this school year so far on good running shoes. Not to mention the ankle, T-band, and knee problems she has had (the reason we kept trying different shoes). This is her first year though, so I'm hoping things will get better. Of course, she loves the sport and wouldn't think of quitting.
