Spoiler
Glass took the inners out of his deadhorse from the cliff jump.
A few part of the final fight were cringe worthy. That said, I did love the film, it easily is one of my favorite films of the year. The cinematography was awesome. Iñárritu wrote and directed a disturbing masterpiece (in a different way than he did with Birdman) and Leo was amazing even with the maybe 5-10 minutes of dialogue he actually had.
Regarding the spoilered part, that was gory but I expected it so it didn't affect me really.

I loved the end fight because of how realistic it was.

Spoiler
Both Glass and Fitzgerald were good fighters, and you could tell Fitzgerald was a good shot because of his accuracy shooting Henry and then his dead body again. It was a fitting fight for those guys. And when you fight with knives and hatchets you generally don't come out unscathed.

On another note, I actually thought this was Inarritu's least pretentious movie. I don't describe his films as pretentious myself, but some do, and in a way I see it, but this one wasn't. It was mostly devoid of his typical surrealism, although it did sneak in a bit.

I am glad you liked it. It's hard for me to compare it to The Martian though or to say which one was better. Both are survival stories but other than that they have nothing in common. I enjoy both kinds of movies...geeky, funny, and with pathos (Martian) and bleak, super realistic (Revenant).

It comes down to personal preference in the end so I understand why you like The Martian more.

Cinematography was fabulous. The musical score was very sparse and perfect, the acting was painful to watch but excellent. The story is far from factual but there was truly never a dull moment. I thought it was excellent.

I saw it last night. Thought it was pretty good. The bear gave the best performance.

From the git go The Martian was a movie made by committee, from the Indian mission director casting to the nice and neat with a bow (hollywood) ending. Trite. Other than that, it was good.

That scene was intense. I was thinking of Ron Howard's cgi fest In the Heart of the Sea when they showed the white water ride, and how well that was done, and how fake the entire Heart of the Sea seemed.

I can't believe that the bear didn't snap his spine to be honest. A LARGE female bear can weigh around 800 pounds. A large male of course weight close to 1,500. Even more that he didn't go into some sort of shock having his flesh peeled. THIS is why we take our dogs when we go hiking they know well before us that a bear is close.

I couldn't believe it either, and BTW, that was the part of the movie that was true, Glass actually survived an attack from a Sow with 2 cubes.

Google it, they tell his story on U-Tube, quite interesting.

Funny that I knew what the opening sounds / [ Elk call ] were / was before the first shot hit the screen. May have something to do with having watch Jeremiah Johnson a gazillion times.

I hadn't planned on seeing this movie...the trailers made me decide that I wasn't up for the gore and violence. However, a friend of mine really wanted to see it, so see it we did...last night. I made up my mind to just close my eyes during the horrible parts (bear mauling, etc.).

I'm a big fan of Leonardo DiCaprio, and he and Tom Hardy were amazing. Scenery was terrific, excellent cinematography. Am glad I went.
