It would help to know if the "same big Hollywood actor" was in either, neither or both of the two films? Also, were the two actresses in also both films or (I'm assuming) one was in the earlier version, and one was in the later version?

This very famous actor didnt star in the 1930s version but married the actress from it..

He starred in the remake in the early 60s and married the leading lady an unknown actress.

Both of these two women played the love interest to the leading man in both movies.

Brando. The movie in question is Mutiny on the Bounty.

Of that particular story, the best film version is actually the 1984 version starring Mel Gibson and Anthony Hopkins.

I LOVE that movie. It's in my top ten favorites. Hopkins was fabulous in it. And the movie score by Vangelis is hauntingly beautiful.

The scene that sticks with me is the scene at the end where Gibson and crew are watching their ship burn from the shores of Pitcairn Island. What a mixture of terrifying emotions they each must have been feeling at that time.
