Just from looking around for a few minutes, I can tell you guys really know your stuff about movies!
Anyway, I'm in an area (Charleston) that's been in a bit of a boom for local/indie film. We have a lot of good stuff going on right now.
I just went to my first film festival ever, the Nuovo Cinema Italiano Film Festival put on by the College of Charleston's language department. It was pretty cool, though you could tell it wasn't very well organized/had a small budget.
Do you seek out small-time local film festivals? Have you been to any good ones? I definitely want to go to more, so let me know, especially if they're in the American south!
I definitely do. I'm lucky that there are quite a few put on by local organizations here. Some are just a couple of days long, some are a week or more. Some coincide with other events or they're a part of larger festivals going on in the city. It's a fun way to see foreign films on the big screen, short films, documentaries, etc., that wouldn't play in the usual chain cinemas, and there's so much more available than a typical arty, "repertory" cinema could ever manage to screen.
Enzian in the Orlando FL area has good festivals. 2016 Florida Film Festival Often there is a major player, such as Roger Corman, Peter Fonda, or Steve B.. Siggy is the driving force behind these and she is passionate about film, and there is enough industry locally to make it a big success.
Florence AL has a smaller low key festival that seems to be growing.
I happen to live in New York, and there was a period when I went regularly to the New York Film Festival and the New Directors festivals. Also, once or twice to IFP. Also, sometimes I go to series that are almost like small festivals. It would be fun in a small town, because you'd probably start seeing the same people.
If you want to seek them out, I believe there's a website that catalogues all film festivals.
We had a great one for 10 years called MicroCinefest. It was held in an illegal space with metal folding chairs. It was very low budget homemade movie stuff. My fave was the comedy shorts. Some twisted ppl out there LOL.
I go to, and have also volunteered at the D.C. Film Festival every year which is held in April. Luckily, several of the theaters I regularly go to plays films which played at some of the bigger festivals (Cannes, Sundance, Telluride, Toronto).
Yes I do like to go to film festivals. There is one near me and have gone and seen some great films.
