This movie has broken records for advance ticket sales. Do we know if this movie will even be a decent Star Wars type movie?
Sounds like the public is hungry for another Star Wars installment without even tasting the food. As for me....I'd like to know a little more about it.
Perhaps the timing is good. Taking the kids to "Star Wars" in December seems like a popular Christmas gift. To me...."Star Wars" seems especially fun for the kids.

No matter what's going on.
The same thing happens with good books. We just want to revisit that land again.
People have been craving a great STAR WARS movie since 1983. The prequels were largely a disappointment to most. Thus, people are hoping this new one might actually recapture the magic.
The previews so far look very promising.
On the other hand, J.J. Abrams does have more than a few duds on his resume. I hope this isn't one of them.
I suspect that the major reason is that the SW franchise decisions have been ripped from George's toy empire hands and given to a director with (hopefully) more artistic integrity. The original and Empire had so much power that they propped up the other episodes, but by now none of the geeks would have bothered to get near a theatre if another Lucas toy advertisement had been screened under the SW name.
Star Wars is a brand. Its fans are the most blindly optimistic of any franchise. The movie is set to make a gazillion dollars. It could be worse than The Phantom Spinach and still make a gazillion dollars simply because the legacy characters (Luke, Leia, Han) are back.
J.J. Abrams is one of the more highly respected directors I think. Maybe not for everyone but surely the director for many. I am highly likely to see his movies. His last name is....ahem...bordering on perfection.

The geeks would camp overnight to wait for the next Lucas Star Wars. Sure, they'd complain about the quality on the Internet, but they'd still line up to watch.

Pretty much. Hollywood thrives on remakes.
