Also love:
Taking Chance (TV Movie 2009) - IMDb

If you're ever curious about the treatment of veterans KIA, this is realistic - except Dover doesn't look like that.

Two by Atom Egoyan:

Exotica (Exotica (1994) - IMDb) A tragedy links the lives of three people together in a surprising way.

The Sweet Hereafter (The Sweet Hereafter (1997) - IMDb) A personal injury lawyer arrives in a small town which is still reeling from a tragic school bus accident, intent on convincing the townspeople to file a lawsuit.

My American Cousin (1985). A 12 year-old girl growing up on a Canadian apple farm in the 1950s is waiting for her life to start. Flawless and beautiful writing and acting. Great music! Not an overblown Hollywood movie. It is a nostalgic gem.

I Know Where I'm Going! (1945) is another fantastic but somewhat unknown movie. Set in Scotland in the 1940's.

OK, maybe I've already made this list (or a similar one) and maybe others have mentioned these, but here goes:

Bagdad Cafe - This is a German made movie but it's in English. Besides the great acting (and a quirky role for Jack Palance!) it also has a very good soundtrack.

Sophie Scholl: The Final Days - Break my heart. Get out your hankies.

Maybe it's not all that obscure, but I'm always surprised when people haven't seen Burn After Reading - my gosh, Brad Pitt is hilarious and WOW you won't expect what happens!:

Same with Bandits - stellar cast and quirky dialogue:

OK, this IS obscure, but it's terrific and will tear your heart out - 1918, about the 1918 flu epidemic at the end of WW1 and it's aftermath:

And here's another Horton Foote gem that will break your heart - Robert Duvall is great in this:

And I don't know why my links aren't showing up as videos. Dang.

Stranger than Paradise is an obscure film I enjoy more and more each time I watch it, as well as Dark City.

Mustang, a Turkish film, just blew me away. If it's still on Netflix it's worth the subtitles.
