The special effects were a really important aspect of that movie back then. The "bullet time" aspect was ground breaking at the time.
There hasn't been a ground-breaking practical effect in movies since bullet time (which was around since the early 90s and was featured in other movies before The Matrix). It's fitting that the movie premiered at the end of the 20th century, as 21st century filmmaking has been taken over by digital effects.
Nope. Just finished rereading Stephen King's [EDIT] The Tommyknockers, and there's a parallel there. I still think they should have incorporated Gracie Slick's song somehow.

OP, you seem to have missed the symbolism and message of the movie. The special effects don't matter.
I didn't miss the symbolism or message of the movie. I just didn't think either were particularly original or well done. It was Plato's cave by way of William Gibson. The Matrix ripped off better movies and TV shows that had come before, but didn't nothing to improve on them, nor did it say anything in a fresh or interesting way.
And I do think the special effects mattered, since that's all anyone was talking about at the time. But again, The Matrix only copies what others had already done better, from Dark City to Blade Runner to GAP commercials.
And it didn't help that the premises of the entire plot doesn't hold up to a moment's scrutiny. But I am hardly the first to point that out:
Based on the comments so far, is it hip to hate on the Matrix now?
I enjoy the movie. I think the plot and story hold up well. Matrix is a movie I can easily pop into the DVD player and enjoy it.
I've hated the movie since it came out. Just not a fan of those films.
