I believe the movie is under assault by leftist animal rights kooks, when it is a nice family oriented movie that is very positive toward mans best friend.
[For those of you who read the book prior to the movie, it follows the book fairly well, but of course does not have all the detail (when do movies ever come close). Bottom line is that if you loved the book you will likely love the movie or at least like it]
Yet the movie has been getting trashed, not by legitimate criticism, but rather animal rights groups who bought a fake news story from TMZ hook, line, and sinker.
They have been voting on RT and other sites giving it a zero or one just to make the movie seem boring, bad, or even abusive to animals,,,none of which is true.
The controversy, if you want to call it that (more like fake outrage based on a fictitious story) is about one scene in the movie where a police dog jumps into the water to save a child's life. According to the fake story which was thoroughly debunked, the German Shepard was forcibly pulled into the water by a line to make it seem as if it voluntarily jumped in to save the child.
[Things have gotten so out of hand than rodents are assigned a specialist to make sure they are not expected to do anything outside of what a normal rodent would do naturally in the wild].
This despite the fact rodents are killed by the hundreds of thousands daily by people across the planet.
Yet the kooks want to complain about a dog allegedly pulled into the water "against it's will", which was not even true. I suppose they think police dogs and rescue dogs that are trained to perform tasks are also being abused/exploited.
The dog was not injured or anything, but maybe it became wet against it's will.
Anyway, it is a very good film, and you should consider it for yourselves, especially if you love dogs or want a wholesome family picture.
I did read the book but have not seen the movie. I had every intention of waiting for it to come out on Demand since I'm not doing the ugly cry in the theater.
But, the video of the terrified dog did disturb me. There was a video and he was obviously terrified; not sure how that was faked

It can be a tear jerker for sure in certain parts of the movie (as in the book). However I am not sure I understand what part you are referring to about the terrified dog
I would note that many people clapped at the end of the film, which now days seems quint, but refreshing.

Apparently they forced a German Shepherd into some water when it clearly didn't want to. Almost drowned.
On some level I get what you mean. Then again, I wonder why people will fork over their money to see vile rubbish with illicit sex, violence, drug use, etc., yet pass on a very positively themed movie that is good for the entire family
People complain about the sick liberal slop promoted by Hollywood, yet keep filling the pockets of the writers, producers, directors and stars of the aforementioned. Yet every time they go to the theaters or rent on demand movies, they encourage the fools to continue to make the mindless slop.
Yet here is a movie that will likely be a flop at the box office not only because of your reasoning, but also the animal right zealots efforts to demonize it.
