We went to theater to see Victoria and Abdul but only front row seats were left
So saw something else which was less than our money's worth...

Has anyone seen Victoria and Abdul--didn't see any threads...
I have seen enough movies lately that have been trite and forgettable
It doesn't get that great a score on Rotten Tomatoes but critics often have their own agendas...

I think it will be a crowd-pleaser for some people, but not for me. I love lavish historical movies and I love Judi Dench, but I found it simplistic and heavy-handed.

Personally, I find Rotten Tomatoes very reliable.

Saw it yesterday. It's like a piece of meringue: sweet, pleasant, and insubstantial. Judy Dench is the major reason to go.

It's not likely to win any awards, but I really enjoyed it. As long as you don't go into it looking for great meaning or depth, you should like it.

So far, the only thing I know about this movie is that I've seen the trailer roughly 50,000 times, online and off-. Sheez.

I dislike lavish historical movies, but I do love Judi Dench. I'm sure I'll watch it at some point.

I feel like I've seen this basic premise from her at least a couple of times, but, like I said, I'll watch it to see her.

One of my favorite roles of hers is from Chocolat.

Did any of you watch Mrs Brown as well...either before or after this movie?

Dame Judi Dench is likely to win a major award nod for this performance .....

Yes--Saw "Victoria and Abdul" a couple of weeks ago and "Mrs. Brown" when it came out...
I didn't really care for Abdul--thought he was more manipulative even while he seemed to admire the Queen and the British Empire in India...

Dench has played Victoria enough she should have her down pat...
The set-down she gave her councilors was delicious
So sad to have such power and not do very much with it really---
She could have taken an interest in improving the lives of the poor, even treating her own personal servants better but she was so erratic as to what took her interest...
Her husband Albert was much more "public-minded"
If he had lived longer maybe she would have been more invested in improving ALL of English society--not just allowing her governments to take over other societies in various countries to enrich Britian...

I saw "Victoria and Abdul" yesterday, and I enjoyed it. Judi Dench was amazing, of course, and I loved the period sets and costumes. I knew ahead of time that the true story would be "embellished", but I still found the movie entertaining.

I finally saw it yesterday on HBO Now. While I enjoyed the historical aspect of it, the film was overall underwhelming to me. It wasn't, say, like The Queen with Helen Mirren, which had more substance to it. Glad I didn't ultimately pay to go see it in theaters.
