I thought the movie was really funny but I was really bothered by the climax.
SPOILER
In the climax the main character wants to complete his 40 days of lent by having no sex and no masturbation. On the last day, just to be sure he handcuffs himself to the bed post, and sleeps. However, while he is sleeping his ex-gf breaks into the apartment and rapes him in his sleep.
His new gf then shows up, catches him with her leaving the room and him and handcuffed. And he assumes that he cheated on her. Later in order to get her back he keeps on apologizing to her to get back.
But this is what really left a bad taste in my mouth. Why should he have to apologize to her, when he was raped, and she assumes it was cheating, and treats the rape insensitively. I feel this is really sexist of the writers, cause if the genders were reversed and a guy walked in on her gf being handcuffed and raped, and then assumed she cheated and decided to leave her, a lot of viewers would not want the woman to keep on apologizing to him in an effort to win him back.
The whole climax and ending just left a bad taste in my mouth therefore, as to what was otherwise, a really funny movie. But maybe I am looking at it the wrong way?

A lot of Catholics didn't like the movie. The Catholic League was officially against it as a horrifyingly negative portrayal of Catholicism. But the movie wasn't really about the Catholic religion itself. It was about a young adult male dealing with the challenges of sexual promiscuity and temptation while trying to stay true to Catholicism. So, to me, as a realist, I thought the film was symbolic of the classic case of "temptation" in the modern world.
He gets dumped by his girlfriend and months later hasn't recovered. He goes through a series of meaningless one-night stands and then learns his ex is getting married. So he decides to take a vow of abstinence. Then all the temptations arise with many comedy scenes and the ongoing "bet" on when he will break. It was hilarious.
The ending was bad though with the climax. He had clearly gotten over his ex but she still "won" the bet. I thought that was a highly inconsistent break on the momentum of the plot and inner sexual tension of hormonal rage. They should have had him go the distance rather than lose on a cheap shot like that from his ex.
In real life, promiscuity is common among Catholics: pre-marital sex, bisexual escapades, birth control, etc. For example, Charlie Sheen was raised by a devout Catholic father who still attends daily Mass. But the not-so-prodigal son lived a life of reckless promiscuity and now has HIV. It seems like "Divine Retribution". He should have taken a vow like the guy in the movie.
