Moby Dick has been filmed a bunch of times, but none of them have ever captured the literature. I expect Dune to be the same.
A new version will probably be entertaining enough, and Dune seems to have the same durability as the chase for the Great White Whale, so I'll probably go see it. I love both books. Some books simply cannot ever capture the full story when it's filmed, so I'll take the new Dune for what it is; a movie.
I just hope it's a completely re-visioned Dune that looks entirely different from the others. There's enough in Frank Herbert's writing to allow that.
Great actor. He looks the part physically, though he seems a little young to me. I can't remember Duke Leto's precise age in the book, but I thought he was late '40s / early '50s. Oscar Isaac is late '30s.
Excellent casting! It's been a long time since I read the book, but isn't Stilgar kind of a minor character?
No. Stilgar is the leader of the Fremen.
All the machinations between the two houses, which are both trying to make a intergalactic power grab, was what made the book as compelling to read as it was.
But unless it's very well scripted, it could either become boring or confusing in a movie.
Scripting it well will really be a big job. Dune is essentially a political thriller in the first half of the book, and then it suddenly becomes a desert adventure tale in the second half in ways the first never gives the reader a clue of what's ahead.
I thought David Lynch did a pretty good job with the first half, but he fell flat on the second.
Yes, I know. I remember him being pivotal in a few scenes. But a very few scenes. It's been years since I last read it though. I may be remembering wrong.

Or it could be the next GAME OF THRONES. But you're right: It all depends on the writing.
Can't wait till this movie comes out. Especially now with how advance movie technology has come along since the original movie came out. I just hope they don't screw it up somehow.
