I’m not talking about pillow talk scenes but entire movies nowadays. Everyone is talking under their breath. I’m constantly having to turn the volume up and down whenever it cuts to an action scene or anything of the like.
Especially when someone is addressing a large crowd and they are damn near whispering. It’s ridiculous. It’s on par with how over acting in early movie makes them almost unwatchable.
At least at home I can turn on the CC - closed captioning - that way I can keep the volume low. I hate loud action scenes and also inevitably loud commercials - and it's a pain to keep having to turn the volume up and down throughout.
This past weekend, I actually learned about a setting that I had no idea my TV had. I was watching Jack Ryan with a friend, and I was having trouble hearing a conversation, but didn't want to turn the TV up because I knew that it wouldn't be long before something would blow up or people started shooting. I complained about not being able to hear the conversation, and my friend asked "is your sound leveling turned on?" My what?? She showed me how to turn it on (in settings>audio; I have a Vizio, by the way). Wow! What a difference! I can hear all the soft spoken conversations without being blown away by the explosions!
I don’t think it’s my tv or devices as I’ve pretty much noticed it across the board.
I’m talking about this in two ways though.
1. It’s a pain
2. It’s so unrealistic. I know I know they’re movies but when someone is addressing 100 people in a field or something and talking under their breathe it’s ridiculous. And I would also call it lazy acting. Jmho
Honestly, it sounds like your center channel is not coming through. Sometimes that would happen in theatres as well when kids stole speakers for their sound systems - it was as you describe. I can't think of a movie where a major speech is soto voce. Play around with your settings, try viewing with a different set or soundbar.

Well your TV may not be causing it, but it may have a setting to correct it. I would recommend going through the audio settings on your TV.
Yea - constantly adjusting volume is super annoying. Much worse at YouTube where every creator seems to have a different idea of what we want. Especially hate those who blare ugly garage band type music. Give those a thumbs down and move on.
I have a Vizio and played with the buttons on the remote. There isn't even a functional settings button.
Oddly I have to adjust the volume even more frequently when using a pretty decent sound bar by Yamaha. I don't use the sound bar for the educational programs that I frequent at YouTube.
If I can't understand the dialogue at the theater that is a major nuisance. My hearing is fine thank you. I can clearly hear beetles walking on the floor.
