I enjoyed seeing "Shaft" in the theaters when it came out. I didn't see the 2000 one and don't remember ever seeing the 1970s versions. My friends wanted to see it, so I went along. It would not have been my choice to see. IMDb was not too kind to it though. Someone said Jackson was too old to play Shaft. He is only six years younger than Richard Roundtree which they allude to in the movie in a spot.

But what reminded me of this movie was I just checked my Facebook Memories. It was three years ago today that we went to the movie and this exchange made me LOL

Shaft: "Have you and me...?"
Bennie: "No, pappy. I'd remember doing a black guy dressed like Morpheus from 'The Matrix.'"
Shaft, Jr starts laughing
Shaft shoots the phone on the desk in anger.
Shaft, Jr: "What was that for?"
Shaft: "Sick of these Laurence Fishbourne jokes. Sh*t's getting old"

The original is a classic that's worth film study for its place in American cinematic history.

Totally. I admit a soft spot in my heart for '70s blacksploitation cinema.

If you'd like to see a great satirical send up of the genre, check out BLACK DYNAMITE. It definitely earns its R-rating, but it is truly hilarious, and like all great satire, it approaches its subject with sincere affection. The chicken and waffles pay-off is one of my all-time favorite movie scenes. The joke builds through the whole movie and finally punches toward the end.
