Exactly. Somebody's making good on their deal. That 86% doesn't line up with IMDb's 7.0 at all. That's a difference of more than 1.5, which is huge.
I just have 0 faith in unfiltered customer reviews. There is no standard. For every honest review, you get others with an ax to grind, be it pro or con, and others who review a product twelve times under twelve different user names. And then you get people like me, who go in and leave sarcastic reviews just for the fun of it.
Even though professional critics are far from infallible, at least their reviews receive some sort of vetting.
I just got back and I enjoyed the movie for what it was. An action space movie. I didn't look for deeper meanings or how it compared to the original. I also thought the ending was near perfect. My biggest complaints about episodes 1, 2, 3, and 6 was that they jumped around way too much. Glad they didn't do that with this one. The story flowed much better.
It has gotten a lot of fan backlash. I thought it was solid, and entertaining, but I can definitely understand how people could be disappointed.
Someone on YouTube made a good point; they really should have given a proper closure for Luke, Leia, and Hans in the trilogy. Instead, they introduced new characters and gave the 3 characters we grew up loving a few patches of screen time. So there wasn't really much closure. Although, apparently Harrison Ford wanted out, so that forced their hand in killing Solo (who was my favorite character in the original). Also, with Carrie Fischer's death (RIP), that obviously changed things. Luke (Mark Hamill) just didn't seem to be as good on an actor now that he's older.
Regardless, I think the lack of cohesion within the trilogy was problematic. I heard there were different directors for each film, and for a temporary franchise finale (for a franchise as great as Star Wars), you would expect more. Marvel wrote the book on how to do it with 21 films and great finales (Infinity War/Endgame), which fans all loved. Star Wars has spanned over almost 40 years at this point, so it's a lot harder for them, but I can see how people could disappointed at Rise of Skywalker as a "finale."
Why should people enjoy it for what it was when it clearly could have been so much better if only a little care and thought had been used when writing the story?
TFA and TLJ already threw this trilogy off a cliff.
TRS was the best of the three, imo, and the only one that didn't bore me to death.
The whole idea of a sequel trilogy was half-baked and fraught with problems.
They should have stuck with the stand-alone stuff.
