Default Ad Astra

Yes, yet another film where somebody has to go into outer space and pull something off to save the planet or whatever. It does already have 84% positive on RT. But the only two "space" movies I saw in a theater in many years (Avatar and Gravity) both had good reviews... 82% for the ridiculous Disney cartoon-ish Avatar and 96% for Gravity which Clooney and Bullock should be ashamed they were even in.

So what about Ad Astra? Is it going to be worth 12 dollars to see Brad Pitt save the world? Even in a higher tech looking and louder than usual movie? With good "other" actors like Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Southerland. (I still have to laugh at his dope smoking college prof character in Animal House)

If you saw the trailers, did anyone else think the character looked like he was on heavy duty mood meds?

So Tommy Lee Jones and Donald Sutherland reprise their characters from "Space Cowboys"? Is that the name of the movie where they left Bruce Willis to blast the asteroid?

The phrase "ad astra" has been around much longer than that. It's Latin for "to the stars."

The more common phrase "per aspera ad astra" means "through hardship to the stars." It's been used for many book and album titles.

"To the stars" being used to name scheduling software makes far less sense to me.

No, that's called Moon. You know, the one where Sam Rockwell clones himself.

I hope it's good-quality hard sci-fi without all the usual Hollywood mystic gunk.
