"Dark Victory" I was never a fan of Bette Davis till I saw this, from 1939. I cried out loud at the end.

This short clip from the film The Fog of War should be watched before viewing Grave of the Fireflies. The film is an interview with Robert McNamara, the secretary of defense during much of the Viet Nam War (it was often called McNamara's war). He also played a major part in the planning of Gen Curtis Lemay's firebombing of Japan. McNamara had major second thoughts about it later.

Hundreds of thousands (at least 500,000, possibly as many as a million) of non-combatants, children, women and old men were burned to death. In LeMay's own words: "scorched and boiled and baked to death." Also in his words: “Killing Japanese didn't bother me very much at that time... I suppose if I had lost the war, I would have been tried as a war criminal.... it doesn't bother me so much to be killing the so-called innocent bystanders.” Robert McNamara agreed that it certainly was a war crime.

Gosh; there are so many. Here's the ones that made me do the Ugly Cry off the top of my head:

1. Sophie's Choice
2. Terms of Endearment
3. Marley and Me
4. Brian's Song (an oldie but a goodie)
5. Passion of the Christ

As a direct result of the five (5) Sullivans' deaths (and the deaths of four of the Borgstrom brothers within a few months of each other two years later), the U.S. War Department adopted the Sole Survivor Policy.

It's also the inspiration for another film with a very sad ending. Full Circle.

Hachi will tear your heart out, throw it on the floor, and stomp on it. The movie, not the dog.
