“Grave of the Fireflies” is definitely one of the saddest and most depressing.
This short clip from the film The Fog of War should be watched before viewing Grave of the Fireflies. The film is an interview with Robert McNamara, the secretary of defense during much of the Viet Nam War (it was often called McNamara's war). He also played a major part in the planning of Gen Curtis Lemay's firebombing of Japan. McNamara had major second thoughts about it later.
Hundreds of thousands (at least 500,000, possibly as many as a million) of non-combatants, children, women and old men were burned to death. In LeMay's own words: "scorched and boiled and baked to death." Also in his words: “Killing Japanese didn't bother me very much at that time... I suppose if I had lost the war, I would have been tried as a war criminal.... it doesn't bother me so much to be killing the so-called innocent bystanders.” Robert McNamara agreed that it certainly was a war crime.
Although it was Hollywood tweaked I'm not sure the intent was propaganda, though in some ways I'm sure it may have helped the war effort. This is a true story that created major changes regarding families serving in the military.
As a direct result of the five (5) Sullivans' deaths (and the deaths of four of the Borgstrom brothers within a few months of each other two years later), the U.S. War Department adopted the Sole Survivor Policy.

My wife wants to see Hachi, I told her she can watch it alone lol.
Hachi will tear your heart out, throw it on the floor, and stomp on it. The movie, not the dog.
