I would put both Gangs of New York and The Departed over this. At least Gangs of New York was somewhat original, and Daniel Day Lewis put out a better and more spirited performance than any of the actors in the Irishman, which is saying a lot.
I wouldn't argue too much about THE DEPARTED, because that is a great movie. But GANGS OF NEW YORK? C'mon. It's not a bad movie exactly, but it isn't great. Lewis is a great actor when he remembers the difference between drama and melodrama, but I think he forgot the difference in that movie. Same thing with THERE WILL BE BLOOD. Switch to decaf, Daniel!

Haha. I don't think Gangs of New York is a great movie, but it seems I like it more than you do. It's definitely not better than The Departed.
One thing I didn't really care for in the Irishman is how no characters other than Frank are really fleshed out. In Goodfellas, we get a good portion of the movie told from Lorraine Bracco's POV. She's not just this accessory to Henry's life of crime. At some point, she's actively involved in it. In the Irishman, Frank's family is pretty much pointless. We don't know much of anything about his family other than his daughter eventually becoming estranged from him. We don't really even get much into Hoffa's head other than knowing that it's "my union" and all. This movie is 100% about Frank Sheeran (who is probably lying about 80% of this stuff) and he's not that interesting.
That's not acting. That's over acting. It's almost cartoonish. Right after that scene, Lewis ran outside and tied a fair maiden to the railroad tracks.

I think that scene is pitch perfect. Bill is supposed to be somewhat volatile and definitely intimidating and DDL comes off as both here.
The Irishman doesn't have any memorable scenes like that IMO and the best scenes were the ones with Stephen Graham (who played Al Capone on Boardwalk Empire).
Also, Bobby Cannavale is criminally underutilized.

As much as I love Pacino, I think he was actually the weakest link in the movie. Part of it was simply that he looks nothing like Jimmy Hoffa physically, and I had a hard time getting past that. But part of it was that he was simply being Pacino, not Hoffa. He's not bad exactly. But he's definitely the weakest link in an otherwise great cast.
Just watched this movie over the weekend.
Like a lot of people, I was concerned about the run time. I have a rough time committing to a movie that is longer than 2.5 hours let alone 3.5! But I did because....well, because DeNiro, Pesci, Pacino & Scorcese and I was not disappointed.
Yes, I'm looking forward to it as well but am I'm still puzzled as to how or when I'll get that opportunity. And, yes, Dances with Wolves trumping Goodfellas was a joke.
Edit: Just did another search and found a theater that I haven't been to in 10 years where it is playing. Will probably go either today or tomorrow.
Hollywood loves a good bashing the white man movie.
