"When Martin Scorsese says that the Marvel pictures are not cinema, he's right because we expect to learn something from cinema, we expect to gain something, some enlightenment, some knowledge, some inspiration.
"I don't know that anyone gets anything out of seeing the same movie over and over again," the 80-year-old filmmaker said.
"Martin was kind when he said it's not cinema. He didn't say it's despicable, which I just say it is."
I get these guys lamenting that dramas don't do as well at the box office as they used to, but they need to get over it. The reality is that most people don't want to spend $40 on a date night to see Susan Sarandon and Julia Roberts move them to tears. People want to go to the movies to eat large buckets of popcorn and nachos while watching explosions on screen. If they want to be moved to tears, they have lots of options between Hulu and Netflix.
Correction: Justice League bombed. Suicide Squad did very well at the box office, to the tune of 325 million domestic and nearly 750 million worldwide.
Justice League holds the record for "most successful box office bomb." It did way better than it should've.
"With an estimated production budget of $300 million, Justice League is one of the most expensive films ever made. The film grossed $657 million worldwide against a break-even point of $750 million, the highest-grossing film (as of 2019) to become a box office bomb, losing the studio an estimated $60 million. The film received mixed reviews from critics; although the action sequences and performances (particularly Gadot and Miller) were praised, the plot, writing, pacing, villain, and overuse of CGI were criticized. The film's tone was met with a polarized reception, with some appreciating the lighter tone compared to the previous DCEU films, and others finding it inconsistent"
Coppola is also the same dude who did THE GODFATHER and APOCALYPSE NOW.
But again, that doesn't mean he's wrong --- or right necessarily. Attack the argument, not the arguer.
If Harvey Weinstein says the sky is blue and water is wet and fire burns, it doesn't make the statement wrong just because Weinstein said it.
Having a few hits under your belt doesn't make you right, nor does it make you the "All-knowing King of Hollywood." I will forever love Coppola for The Godfather, but let's not act like he hasn't bad a ton of ****ty movies either.

Jeepers Creepers Trilogy
I could go on. Oh, and let's not forget his biggest cash grab, The Godfather III. Also, am I the only one who finds it odd that these two are suddendly bitching and moaning, bashing Marvel when Scorsese is ready to release a film, and rumor has it Coppola is working on something as well? Seems all too convenient to me.
"Let me bash the latest trend to gain traction and be relevant again." Maybe Scorsese would've gotten more funding for The Irishman if he wasn't so adamant about casting 3 old men, just to eat up the budget to digitally de-age them.
