Kinda odd but I have always enjoyed books or movies centered around families or neighborhoods knowing a situation is coming (disaster, invasion, etc) and it showing those said people plan and get ready for it...does anyone have any movies off the top of there head that fit that criteria?

C-D has a Self Sufficiency/Preparedness subforum. Whether its an invasion from outer space, some belligerent earthly nation, or a natural disaster, folks there may discuss prepping for it.

Knowing - OK
The Day The World Stood Still - Liked it
2012 - OK
The Day After Tomorrow - Liked it
The War of the Worlds - Liked it

And a noteworthy addition to this list:
Contagion, a movie about worldwide deadly virus infection.
If you think it sounds familiar, wait till you actually watch it and not be baffled that it was made in 2011!

"Greenland" comes to mind. One of the best disaster movies that I've seen in recent years and is centered around family, and planning for survival. I don't want to spoil it but if you haven't seen it yet, definitely check it out.

The Day After, a 1983 made-for-TV movie about people surviving in Middle America after WW3 goes nuclear. Not exactly showing how people prepared for nuclear Armageddon, rather how impossible it would be to prepare for a disaster of such magnitude, let alone survive it.

A movie so influential that Ronald Reagan mentioned it in both his daily diary and in his memoirs, and credited it as the beginning point that ended in the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces Treaty between the US and the USSR, resulting in the banning and reducing of nuclear forces on both sides of the Cold War.
