Anybody plan on seeing this? This review is harsh ~ has Tom lost his appeal?
"Cruise wears an eye patch and a Nazi uniform, but speaks with the same flat, unaffected American accent that places him somewhere between Redondo Beach and Johnny Rockets. It’s absolutely hysterical to hear and see a boyish Nazi with blazing white perfect teeth and that voice announce, “We must kill Hitler.”
The accent is only part of the problem, but it’s a big part. Cruise apparently didn’t even try for a German sound to play Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg. It’s as if Meryl Streep wandered into “Sophie’s Choice” sounding like a Valley Girl.
If this was the way he thought he’d get to the hearts and minds of Germans, maybe he should get some new marketing advice. When the fans in that country see this, even Brunhilde won’t be able to help him!
That review is hilarious.
I've always thought that, despite his big-money-making potential, strong work ethic (so I hear), and good looks - he is just not a great actor (that's being generous).
He's passable in most of the roles he takes and good in some, but I can easily picture him flopping big-time in this one.
I always thought him to be an over rated actor and thought his celebrity status and gargantuan wealth must be do to the fact that he sold his soul to the devil. Now I see its a perk from Scientology.

heh
Well, what should he have done, spoken in German-accented English as in the movies of the 40s, 50s and 60s? That seems so bogus.
You either know and speak the language, or you don't.
Jodie Foster spoke perfect French in The Very Long Engagement.
Cruise sort of reminds me of Mel Gibson in that sometimes he is just playing himself. However, like Gibson, given the right role he can shine.
Cruise was excellent--almost a revelation--in Collateral.
Maybe both of those guys are jerks in their personal lives, but I am going to give him the benefit of the doubt on this one.
Sure, he might indeed be miscast, but I'm not going to hold his perfect teeth against him.
Tom Cruise is a good actor. Not bad, but not great. He has limited range. I think he got a little too ambitious with this project. He produced the film I believe, so maybe that is why he was casted, .
He was really good in Magnolia (a movie I hated otherwise), Jerry Maguire, Collateral (probably the best he's done beyond his range), and Born on the 4th of July.
Looking forward to this movie actually - mostly because my father's great-uncle was one of the plotters. He was not a major player (and thus not featured in the film) - just one of many commanders who were supposed to rise up and seize control once word came down that Hitler was dead. In his particular case, he apparently lost his nerve and didn't take any action - which no doubt saved him since he was able to cover his tracks and avoid detection by Hitler. He survived the war and apparently served some time for war crimes (not sure of the details).
I'm not much of a Cruise fan, like someone else said he just seems to play himself. The best work he's ever done have been "Risky Business", "Born On The Fourth Of July", "Magnolia", "Collateral" and now "TROPIC THUNDER".
I've heard some buzz that he may get a supporting actor nod, I haven't looked to see if he got any Golden Globe recognition. I don't know any of the "inside baseball" type stuff but apparently that was supposed to be a rip on Harvey Weinstein. I didn't think Cruise had it in him.

Ken
Ken, that's fascinating--makes the story so much more real to me.

Totally Weinstein. He cracked me up in Tropic Thunder, and the films you named are my Cruise favorites.
My husband's favorite bit in Risky Business is when things are looking grim, and Cruise, who aspires to attend Princeton, announces "Looks like it's University of Illinois!" (Yes, my spouse is an Illini.)
My kid really wants to see Valkerie. I saw the trailer not long ago.
It looks to me like Cruise playing Cruise again, but it might be an okay popcorn movie.

LMAO!
But yeah. Guy can't act his way out of a paper bag.
