I dont watch too many old movies but this one interested me..
Because of the true story it was based on.
A place in the sun w/Elizabeth Taylor great movie!
I didnt know the male lead until i saw the film but i guess he was..
A huge star during that time period.
What about some other great films during the 40's-50's???

The guy you're talking about is Montgomery Clift, one of the greatest film actors ever. When they asked DeNiro who his favorite actors were, he said, Marlon Brando, James Dean, and Montgomery Clift. You may have seen Clift in From Here to Eternity, Wild River, and Raintree County, also withe Liz Taylor. During the filming of that movie, Clift and Taylor, very close friends, were in a terrible car accident. She walked away without a scratch, and Clift was permanently disfigured. If you watch that movie even with the layers of make-up there is quite a difference...
I've seen a lot of movies from the 40' and 50's, though it's hard to call 'em out when somebody asks me, but if you're really interested I'll tell you what I think you should do. Settle on some actors and actresses from that time and look at their work. One film will lead to another to another actor and another film and so on. Some that I think are really worth checking out are Spencer Tracy, Humphrey Bogart, Bette Davis, Katharine Hepburn, etc.
My favorite movies from that time period are the Abbott and Costello movies (better than The Three Stooges in my opinion) and The Beast From 2,000 Fathoms (which I have on DVD).
A Place in the Sun and From Here to Eternity are two of my favorite older films with Montgomery Clift. Young Lions was also very good.
Some other favorites:
12 Angry Men
African Queen
Treasure of Sierra Madre
The Harder They Fall
Some Like It Hot
Man With the Golden Arm
Panic in the Streets
Suddenly
Rio Bravo
Somebody Up There Likes Me
Long Hot Summer
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof
I love Some Like It Hot, 12 Angry Men and The African Queen!
I guess Casablanca qualifies.
