Phantom Thread (2017), Paul Thomas Anderson - 10/10. #1 for 2017 to date..
Spoiler
That one shot in the alps - breathless. The work on the stairs during the opening scenes. And the laughs. Seriously funny. And that one shot of Manville as she walks sternly to the door straight into the camera to open the door. So many of those. And the mushroom cam (kind of a pulp fiction trunk cam). Even the shots of him driving, feeling the bumps in the twisty roads. You think, man that music is great, then you get a perfect close up of Krieps, and then you think, no way she's going to do that. And the ending has me thinking. Thimble? Omlette? Something's not right. Ambiguity. Genious (PTA).
a very black comedy start Simon Pegg and David Schwimmer.
Very hit and miss, with far too many silly coincidences and unbelievable situations. Little characterisation and the direction gets a little lost in the convoluted plot. That said, Pegg and Schwimmer get on very well together, and most of the humour comes from them and their outrageous pratfalls.

We saw this-
The ambiguity was an issue for us...
Not as enamoured afterward as anticipated but the shot framing was stunning...
Manville was nominated but I couldn't decide if she was more Mrs. Danvers from "Rebecca" or Arthur's butler--
Krieps was excellent as was Lewis--but I think to have this be his last film misses the mark somehow...
not that Lewis cares what anyone thinks...
Saw "Hostiles"
My husband was looking forward to this since seeing trailers and very disappointed after
Much hype but not validated IOO
Predictable and while it is supposed to be "unique" -- for anyone who has seen a variety of maybe lesser-known movies with Native American storylines, script included plenty of re-hashed plot elements
Many aspects like natural light shooting at night, location shooting, costuming---and yes, the much-touted use of an almost extinct dialect ---those are well done
I noted that Bale's uniform gets decidedly more worn by end of the movie--that is nice touch
but how his character changes over time is less well documented...
Ms Pike manages to look elegant and very unlike a woman who has lived a harsh, isolated existence--note how well-kept her hands are for example...
Blocker's long-time compatriot/Master Sgt Thomas Metz (with an Irish accent) played by Rory Cochran is one character who exhibits a natural progression of angst...
Other aspects just seem cobbled together from a pastiche of movies with sympathy for Native Americans...
Not criticizing the sympathy--just the movie's crafting...
I watched the documentary "I Am Jane Doe" - not something I thought I would watch after I realized what it was about, but I couldn't stop watching it and all I could say is WOW!
Watched Disney's "Pinnochio" last night w/our 5 yr old grandson--
Just a work of art even if the story is clunky at times
Thought he might be bored in some parts but he was interested throughout...
Such a funny movie! Jane Curtin is hilarious. And everyone was so young!
