Just finished “The Good Liar” for second time w/Helen Mirren and Ian McKellen—directed by Bill Condon
It didn’t get great reviews or box office because it involves the “long con” and think people thought it was slow moving
But engaging and interesting to revisit and judge characters’ actions/expressions once you know how the ending goes
Nice location shooting in London as well
I agree, I found it interesting trying to gauge their actions/expressions the first time through. I didn't find it slow-moving at all.
We finally got around to watching The Peanut Butter Falcon (2019). Great movie! Really fun, with lots of great "characters." One of the best times I've had watching a movie in a while.
This one kept me wound in the the entire time. I was thinking about taking an intermission half way through but when I checked the timer, I was already past that point, without realizing it, so I kept on going.
It's "Cops & Robbers" day at the ranch house and having to stay home to stay in the shadows, I actually got a chance to watch a crime show, the Cannon pilot flick, and this one. It had been sitting out for weeks for this theme day and I finally popped it in. I probably picked it up at a dollar store and it is a nice treat for the buck cost of a ticket.
The movie left me with a complete feeling, a refreshed feeling when the credits were rolling. For me, a 9 at least.
It took me 31 years to finally see this. I was in grade school when this was first released. Back then I watched all the behind the scene shows about how they made the movie.
After watching this, they should've let this movie fall deep into the abyss. The technical aspect of the movie is good. It's the sci-fi part that ruins it.

This is why people often read the book instead of watching the movie. Some movies perfectly catch the book. Movies such as "Catch 22" and "No Country For Old Men" perfectly reflect the books, right down to the dialogue.
Much more often, the complexity of the characters and sub-plots is often impossible to capture. The Lord of the Rings movies were very true to the books, but often audiences unfamiliar with the books struggled to understand the movies.
Science fiction is particularly bad because often good science fiction books are made into sloppy, cheap, bad B-movies. They like the ide of the book and just turn it into a crappy movie because they don't want to spend the money to honor the book as it should be honored. Lots of bad movies have been based on great books.
Frankly, I was thrilled when Steve Spielberg essentially followed Michael Chrichton's novel reasonably well with Jurassic Park. But then, that was before Spielberg crashed and burned making the unwatchable cramp he has been making at least since Minority Report.
Streamed The Assistant (2020) for $5.99 on Amazon. While I rated it 9/10, I kind of doubt many would enjoy this. It's my kind of film though as I don't put that much into endings. And, if you're not going to see it, spoilers don't matter: [ surprisingly, the entire film happens in one day, and you can't tie everything up in a neat bow anyway ]. Second best 2020 film I've seen so far, which has been hampered by covid19 of course.
"To Walk Invisible" (2017), PBS/British production about the Bronte sisters--Emily, Charlotte, and Anne. This is a beautifully written and acted movie and despite their struggles, it is not depressing. The three lead actresses in particular are incredible! Beautiful scenery too.
