Fanny (1961) with Leslie Caron and Maurice Chevalier. The many shots of Marseilles must have been a beautiful thing to see on the big screen. As I was watching it, I kept thinking it was bit ridiculous with some of its over the top characters, but I have to say that the story has stuck with me. Before seeing it, I had thought it was a musical (the stage version was), and as I watched it, I could tell it had been a musical at some point, because it looked like people were constantly on the verge of breaking into song, and then thought better of it.

Chinatown (1974)

What more can be said about Chinatown? It's the perfect neo-noir. Nicholson is his brilliant self, all of the acting is superb, it features a complex noirish plot that nonetheless all comes together at the end, and is gorgeously shot.

And on that last note, it occurs to me that the film is a time-capsule, two-fold. First, it's a 1970s film set in the 1930s. On the surface of it, it is a period piece. But secondly, it oozes that certain vibe, with that unmistakable look, of films from approximately the late '60s to mid-70s. In that way, time has made it a period piece of itself.

I appreciated it more this time, than when I first saw it over a decade ago.

Today "Triple 9" -- better than we anticipated but very much a mish-mash of similar films
Kate Winslet an eye opener---maybe best supporting nod in 2017 just because even more evil an her role in Divergent series...and thus out of the norm for her...they must have done something to her face with prosthetics...she really doesn't look like herself...

Casey Affleck stars but part is pretty minimal
Woody Harrelson plays his True Detective persona gone to the dark side...more like MC's Rust...
And Atlanta cops now rank as worse than New Orleans or LA based on this movie---didn't do the city any favors...

DUFFY: The Man Who Shot the Sixties
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jyRPfevrb1k

It's a biography of one of the top fashion/celebrity photographers of the 1960s. Actually quite interesting... a complex character, and a glimpse into London's Swinging Sixties.

Pure (2009)
Quote:
Katarina is 20 years old. With a troubled past in a dreary suburb, her life seems to be already set in stone - until she discovers music. Everything changes when she hears a performance of Mozart's Requiem at the Gothenburg Concert Hall that sends her reeling and opens up a beautiful new world. She feels that she has to change her life and get as far away from her ugly reality as possible.

It is too early on a Saturday morning to willingly place my heart in the jaws of a bench vise and allow this movie to slowly turn the handle 'til I struggled to breathe and yearned to give Katarina a big hug. The movie is difficult to watch but I was riveted by Alicia Vikander's performance.

From a review on imdb...
Quote:
The entire film depends on the performance of Alicia Vikander as Katarina, and that performance is flawless...

I couldn't have said it better myself. I know, I tried

P.S. For the multitudes (okay it was just one) that asked if I enjoyed Species, it was just Okay.
