Question about (vhs, watching, Nick Nolte, character)

48 Hours Movie from 1982. I'm watching it now. When Nick Nolte and his girlfriend wake up together and when he is getting dressed for work at the beginning his girl tells him she ought to go to his place where there are clean shirts(i think she gives him a clean shirt) and he says to her "what makes you think there are any clean shirts at my place?" and he throws his shirt back on to her.

Why does he say that to her?

Because they are establishing that his character is a slob and doesn't give a toss who knows it.
