We already had a thread for my *favorite* kinds of scary movies, the subtle ones that thrill and chill without a whole lot of screaming and gore. Scary but not gory movies
With Halloween approaching, perhaps some of you have movies, gory or not, that you always have on hand.
We used to always watch:
The Shining ~~ slow build-up of terror in Estes Park--those twins!
redrum redrum...
Lady in White The year is 1962. The place is Willowpoint Falls. Nobody talks about what happened in the school cloakroom 10 years ago. Now, in the dead of night, Frankie Scarlatti is going to find out why.
It seems like a kid's movie until you see what happened in the cloakroom.
This indie movie's few special effects are cheesy, but fortunately it relies more on plot, character, and mystery.
Rediscovered:
There is a movie I saw years and years ago (1980 or '81) that always haunted me. It too is more of a psychological story, set in a crumbling estate (Scottish?) at the turn of the century.
However, there is definitely a ghost. For years the title eluded me but yesterday it just came to me out of the blue: The Haunting of M
There is a suspenseful rocking chair scene in that film that had me on the edge of my seat. The director did much with very little.
My favorite horror/slasher "series" was Nightmare on Elm Street. Never really found it scary, it was just that Freddy's one liners cracked me up.
I can't remember the name of it but one of the freakiest/scariest movies ever was one where these people would kill their victims on stage in front of other people. The audience thought it was performance art.
My halloween favorites tend to be less about being scary, and more about having a Halloween theme.
Ernest Scared Stupid
Monster Squad
Hocus Pocus
Casper
Nightmare Before Christmas
Trick R Treat
While not particularly worthy of any great acclaim, they do serve the purpose of getting me into the Halloween spirit.
Interesting thread, I am looking forward to seeing what other people enjoy watching.
In the same vein...if you liked the above, check out a '60s movie, The Ghost and Mr. Chicken with Don Knotts.
