I loved George Clooney in Michael Clayton and some others but this movie which got 3 1/2 stars (out of 4) in my area just seemed stupid. I saw people walk out also. My son, age 20, also saw it and thought the same.
I think it was missing something. I kept trying to figure out what it was. The absurdity of the training, and Clooney's character's earnest belief, was mis-played, I think. It was allllmost funny. Kevin Spacey's character came out of nowhere and just took over the narrative to the point that it seemed like a rushed ending.
Tragic that it came out the day after the Fort Hood event. I bet they would like to have reworked those two scenes. Very jarring.
It looked like the work of a first time director, and the editing killed a lot of the comedy, i think. The timing throughout was way off.
I really enjoyed it and found it very funny. I thought it was very deadpan , very British in a way. It was not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination but there were some sparks of brilliance to it.
I also thought the film was structured more like proper "story-telling" rather a straight script and was quite original especially having come out of Hollywood. I found it quite charming and disarming.
I guess humour is a very personal thing... I can't remember the last time I laughed at a Hollywood comedy so this was quite refreshing for me.

Am I missing something?
What were you expecting? Did you honestly think from the film's promotional clips that it would be humorous?
Its not that I was ever the best military bearing or my uniform had the best crease but it still irritates me to see Hollywood movies that barely even try - hair all long, mustaches half way to their ears, sideburns all long. Haven't seen the movie and might enjoy it somewhat taking it for what it is, but the trailers where irritating for the way some of them looked.

If you see the movie you will understand the "why" of the "Hippie" bearing of that particular unit. It's part of the plot not some Hollywood aberration of the wardrobe mistress !

Just saw and lol'd at and with this movie... found it entertaining, funny, intelligent, and enjoyable. Only negative - just seemed a bit short. The acting / characters were great, as was the script and locations. As Mooseketeer implies, its all in the eye of the beholder. Me and mine, rated this as a 8 out of 10. One important aspect of this movie that might be important to recognize - this is NOT a comedy per se... but a film with humor, telling a story, as a documentary, a quirky dark-humor documentary; where goofy line is "Silence of the Goats" is stated
I thought it was stupid. Similarly stupid as The Darjeeling Limited and The Life Acquatic and Running with Scissors. I have a very dry sense of humor but these take it to a whole new level. Its like the lack of humor in the movie is what is supposed to be funny. Instead I just find them dumb.
Fortunately I've learned my lesson and I don't pay to see these (a roommate had rented Men Who Stare at Goats).

I thought The Life Aquatic was wonderful, but oddly I think you have to watch it more than once to get the full effect. It was very carefully crafted.
