The Thing I really liked both versions Howard hawks 1951 version and John carpenters 1982 version the first movie created suspense by leaving the thing largely unseen lurking in the shadows The latter was a carnival of gore. An amusing note when the remake by carpenter was released universal sent notes along with all the prints of the film suggesting to theater owners to play the film in an auditorium near the restrooms afraid that people would be so sickened by the violence that they would throw up

Not really a "monster" but Stephen King and George Romero's "Creepshow" had a short story called "The Crate" and that always scared me as a kid. Aside from that Michael Myers has always been my monster of choice
