I am in utter and complete shock that Blind side was nominated. All the other 9 IMo are worthy, but Blind side I'm shocked that it was even a contender to get 1 vote

'Avatar,' 'The Hurt Locker' lead Oscar nominations - Yahoo! News (http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20100202/ap_on_en_mo/us_oscars - broken link)

BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. – The science-fiction sensation "Avatar" and the war-on-terror thriller "The Hurt Locker" lead the Academy Awards with nine nominations each, including best picture and director for James Cameron and ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow.

For the first time the Oscars feature 10 best-picture contenders instead of the usual five.

Also nominated for best-picture Tuesday: "District 9"; the animated comedy "Up"; the World War II saga "Inglourious Basterds"; the football drama "The Blind Side"; the recession tale "Up in The Air," the 1960s drama "A Serious Man," and the teen tales "An Education," and "Precious."

The interesting debate would be if they only could nominate 5 films (like every year since 1947) what would be the five

Hurt Locker
Avatar
Up in the Air
Inglourious Basterds
Feel very confident about those 4

Tough picking the 5th. I would guess Precious - but that is a tough call

I'm not at all surprised by the nomination of The blind side. This film got very good criticism and many people said they loved it.

Has nothing to do with whether it is uplifting. I just didn't think it was very well done - I haven't seen a movie that I've rolled my eyes that often in many a year. The writing wasn't good. The subject matter was great, but they made IMO a poor movie from great source material

I thought it was really good and such a departure for Sandra Bullock. Not the same slapstick romcom garbage that she usually gives us.
