Man, I would sure say at least half a country singer..sure, he who is known for his blistering guitar solos rocks out harder than most anyone, but, even his classic albums were tinged hugely with country, even his sole number 1, "Heart of Gold"..Twange, acostic strumming, country lyrics, along with most of Harvest, prob his best album...And how about being the founder of Farm Aid with Willie Nelson, and his concerts in the mid 80's with a country backing band?
Anyway, here are some songs of his that will toss a little fire/proof on that line of thought....Yep, Neil was a Canuck, but like his fellow Canucks "The Band", he was really country at heart, when all is said....
I had second thoughts, and tossed some Harvest stuff on here....certainly can be construed as country..actually older classic country going back to the days of the Jimmy rogers story songs of the 30's....or Johnny Cash...these were actually recorded in Nashville, along with the rest of harvest....and, as a side note, Linda Ronstadt and James Taylor just happened to be in town in Nashville taping the Johnny Cash show(which was taped at the old ryman auditorium).....and both sang background vocals on Heart of Gold and Old Man...you can totally hear Linda Ronstadt's vocals in the background of "Heart of Gold" if you listen..
Extra treat for you folks....I mentioned that Young was in nashville to tape the Johnny cash show when he ran into taylor and ronstadt...he sang both songs here on the show that week he recorded the tunes in the studio in town , BEFORE he recorded them that week in town....
Listen and you can hear him say, "This is a new song I wrote" before Heart of Gold...so the lucky audience was hearing this for the first time in Nashville, of all places, before it bacame a number 1 hit 2 months later..
What's interesting is that his brand of country is never played on country stations. But to me, he brings a more soulful country sound than just about anyone else. He IS a flannel shirt kinda guy. And then he turns around and rocks out with Crazy Horse in such a way that's he's earned the nickname the godfather of grunge. Hard to nail him down genre-wise but I've been a fan since Buffalo Springfield and I don't really mind. Such an awesome songwriter/player/singer. Keep it goin' Neil!. Long may you run ...
Actually, in a different way, Neil anticipated "Country Rock" on Harvest with these two from the same album...whose to say that Skynyrd didn't pick up a little somthing from harvest, as surely they were listening to it down in Florida from whence they came..didnt a song they hit it big with have that word in tht title as well? Hmmmm!
And now "Weirded-Out" time...this is an appearance of Young on Nashville Now, a popular show with the famous(at the time) ralph emery as host....early 80's appearance...
