There's a possibility of 2 different ones as I don't remember the exact date graduation took place. Seems it was about the middle of June and I do remember it being hotter than a pistol that day. I carried a small radio with me and I don't have the foggiest what tunes I heard on it, which kinda defeats the whole purpose now that I think about it. But it was one of these two at the top of the charts.
Brown Sugar - Rolling Stones
Want Ads - Honey Cone
Considering this will be my only post on this thread, here is a piece of history.
This was in 1984. Deniece Williams had this song at number one for two weeks, and it was a great song to dance to when you wanted. In my opinion, it was her best single.
Number 1: Can't Get No Satisfaction Rolling Stones
Other songs at the same time:
Yesterday- Beatles
Help- Beatles
Mrs Brown, You've Got A Lovely Daughter -Herman's Hermits
Turn! Turn! Turn!- Byrds
I Got You Babe - Sonny & Cher
Downtown - Petula Clark
I Can't Help Myself- Four Tops
You've Lost That Loving Feeling - Righteous Bros.
It was either "MMMBop" by Hanson or the tribute to the death of Notorious B.I.G.--"I'll Be Missing You" by Puff Daddy and Faith Evans(which ripped off the Police and Every Breath You Take). Not a great year for popular music from what I can remember.
Interesting factoid about 1997---almost half of the year (23 weeks) the number one song on the charts was either a tribute song to the death of rapper Biggie Smalls or to Princess Diana(Elton John's remake of Candle in the Wind).
