It seems like the most poetic lyrics I've heard come from singer-songwriters (Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell, Van Morrison, etc.) or from classical composers (who are usually setting music to real poetry written by actual poets). It's rare for me to hear a rock band with lyrics that are sophisticated, full of rich, non-cliched imagery, AND are emotionally resonant. In case you're curious, Peter Gabriel and Fish (original vocalist for Marillion) are my favorite lyricists.

So, I've got a challenge to everyone on the board here: introduce me to some rock bands that have non-cheesy poetic lyrics. I don't mind lyrics that are challenging, but for God's sake, please don't suggest bands with lyrics that are so obscure that they are basically meaningless (Yes and The Mars Volta being the worst offenders in this department).

I recommend The The. I think Matt Johnson is by far one of the most underrated artists in the world.

Joseph Arthur. A prophet, a visionary, an underappreciated genius! The most vital artist in the world today. Joseph Arthur.

Dylan is the Best! I like a lot of Jim Morrison's lyrics on The Doors songs. I especially like Soul Kitchen. Here is a snippet.

Let me sleep all night in your soul kitchen,
Warm my mind near your gentle stove.
Turn me out and I'll wander baby,
Stumblin' in the neon groves.

This whole song is a good example.

Pete Sinfield for sure. Good choice Newmex!

Another choice would be Keith Reed, lyricist for the British prog rock band Procol Harum.

Not sure what you consider as rock bands, or cheesy, or if you are looking for current music...all a matter of choice...really....I really like Aqualung as someone fresh and new, maybe a little too Pop, for what you are looking for:

YouTube - Aqualung - Something To Believe In

YouTube - Aqualung - Brighter Than Sunshine

I'm not very focused on lyrics. I don't demand more than that they don't ruin the song, but they certainly don't need to be poetic or intelligent for me to be satisfied with a song. However, I do sometimes enjoy when lyrics go beyond that minimal demand.

I will second X as having pretty interesting lyrics (though I think it tends to be more along the lines of good individual lines that jump out as very striking, rather than the entire song lyrics). Others would include Neil Young (some of the time), Kate Bush, and the Raincoats.

No Looking lyrics - No Looking song lyrics : Music Blogs and Videos

Okay, those lyrics don't really stand up so well on their own either, but I still think they are unusually poetic.

Here are some examples of bands that were consistently good with music and lyrics:

Elvis Costello and the Attractions, "Watching the Detectives":
