IMO, Joni is a great songwriter but her voice is an acquired taste. Judy's voice is amazing.
Yes.
Two different styles here but two great ladies. Her very first lp is a gem, but for some reason it got lost in the shuffle. It, BTW was produced by David Crosby. In my area FM radio finally made its presence known in 1969. Later that year her second lp Clouds was released; then Ladies Of The Canyon, Blue, For The Roses, and one of the best lp's in anyone's collection, the 1974 release Court and Spark. And still is going strong today! If there is one artist that I could name who I've never seen in concert that I would LOVE to see it would be Joni!
Judy had released a number of lp's on Elektra going back to maybe 1962 but one would be hard pressed to hear any songs from those lp's on the radio at that time except maybe PBS type stations. That all changed when 1968's Wildflowers was released and the big hit there would be "Both Sides Now." THAT song btw was written by Joni Mitchell!
I've seen Judy in concert a couple times and like Spikett says her voice IS amazing!
I have to vote for Joni. It's very close though. Joni brings emotion to the song. The subject is sad and reflective, and Judy really brightens up the lyrics, while Joni deals with the loss, and makes you fell it.
What are you kidding? Judy Collins is classically trained and sounded like it just as Baez did, and she had something off pitch wise. Joni is a natural singer and many more dominant vocalists say she's their biggest influence including unbelievably Chaka Kahn and other soul artists with far earthier stronger voices. Joni Mitchell is a practically her own genre. In todays world if Joni was 25 she'd still be on top but that older oversungfolk style is gone now nobody sings ala light opera anymore. I don't even think they belong in the same sentence. And for those of you who don't seem to be aware, Joni Mitchell wrote the song Both Sides Now she didn't just sing it. Collins got to record it via David Crosby and record company strategy to get Join cuts as a writer before her debut.
