I was driving to work this morning, flipping through the radio stations, and came across this local 'classics' station that rebroadcasts old American Top 40 countdowns with Casey Kasem - and this was playing.
I was speechless, listening. When I googled it, I discovered that it peaked at #8 on the U.S. charts. I doubt there are very many top 10 70s songs I haven't heard, but I'd never heard this before (and I'm pretty sure I'd remember if I had).
I can see why it feel into obscurity!
The link is broken, but I know the song. Hilarious lyric!
"Speak your truth quietly and clearly; and listen to others, even to the dull and the ignorant; they too have their story."
Sister Janet Mead - The Lord's Prayer, from 1973. Peaked at #4 in 1974, behind "Bennie and the Jets", "TSOP", and "Hooked On a Feeling". Despite the high charting, does anyone remember it?
Lyrics which by 1973 may have been tame compared to songs like Lou Christie's "Lightnin Strikes" or Chuck Berry's "Reelin and Rockin" (uncensored version which was posted on another thread) which were banned on some radio stations.
Hail (hail)
What's the matter with your head, yeah
Hail (hail)
What's the matter with your mind
And your sign an-a, oh-oh-oh
Hail (hail)
Nothin' the matter with your head
Baby find it, come on and find it
Hail, with it baby
'Cause you're fine
And you're mine, and you look so divine
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Hail (hail)
What's the matter with you feel right
Don't you feel right baby
Hail, oh yeah
Get it from the main vine, all right
I said-a find it, find it
Go on and love it if you like it, yeah
Hail (hail)
It's your business if you want some, take some
Get it together baby
Come and get your love
repeat
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love
Come and get your love
Come and get your love, now
Come and get your love
repeat
Hail (hail)
What's the matter with you feel right
Don't you feel right baby
Hail, oh yeah
Get it from the main vine, all right
Come and get your love
repeat
Ian Matthews had a hit earlier in the decade, a cover of Woodstock under the name Matthews Southern Comfort. This pop tune made the top 20 in 1979.
Ian Matthews - Shake It
Just did a quick browse through this thread. Many of these are really obscure... in other words, I never heard of them. That Lord's Prayer song for one which apparently went high on the charts. I did see one song here that resides on my Ipod, and that is Hypnotized by Fleetwood Mac (although technically I have the Bob Welch version. Believe there were copyright issues that were never resolved).
