Their 1970-77 period is pretty much solid gold to me.

You may tell that I prefer the softer, moodier pieces, which to me are even more unique than their theatrically rocking pieces. A rarity in rock music, their composing ability actually exceeds their playing - Phil on drums was the only virtuoso. But the music, especially the harmonies they create, are peerless for me.

I'd have to argue that Tony Banks was also a virtuoso as far as being a pioneering prog rock keyboardist, and Steve Hackett was tapping the fret board well before Eddie Van Halen, and Mike Rutherford was also busy playing bass and guitar while dancing on Taurus bass pedals like no one before...Even though this thread is about a year old, I needed to chime in...I'm new here.
