As a person who works out at the gym and runs 6 days a week, my workout music has run the gamut the past 20-odd yrs from periods of listening to absolutely nothing, to a broad spectrum of music from soft to the beatiest beats there are. A recent 1-hr set has included Judy Collins, Metallica, Earl Klugh, Country Comfort (Hawaii) and Tupac classics among them so I like to workout to a wide range of music.

Anyway, I heard “One Wish” by Hiroshima on the radio a few weeks ago for the first time in years which took me down a wormhole leading back to some JazzMasters that I have had in my music library since the early 90s. It reminded me how great and relaxing Smooth Jazz can make the moment feel when it is done well - and Paul Hardcastle has done many great ones.

I have had “Slomotion” on my playlist often on repeat for a few weeks now...the song has a way of making me feel good.

Hardcastle’s “19” is what he will be remembered for the most when he is no longer with us. It has a nice beat and the social/political statement was a cold splash thrown into our collective faces - facts and figures about historical events can become mind numbing and dull, but “19” repeatedly told us behind a good beat that the average age of the US soldier in Vietnam was 19yrs old...that type of fact stays in one’s brain forever.

Having said that, I would argue that the two most important songs in one big corner of the Smooth Jazz-Funk universe are “One Wish” by Hiroshima and “Rain Forest” by Hardcastle for how they made an imprint on the broader pop music boards and created an audience and a market for this type of music.
